Full-Time Design Engineer – Packaging

Summary

Weber is seeking a highly motivated Design Engineer to support the packaging team. You will be involved in projects for the US market in collaboration with our German teams. This unique opportunity will allow you to engage with all phases of design development from new technology, component design, and manufacturing.  The successful candidate must be able to work quickly, efficiently with strong interpersonal and communication skills, detailed oriented and not afraid to be creative and precise in delivery of new and existing designs.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Support the engineering group with design of proprietary thermoforming machinery, tooling, fixtures, and other mechanical components used in the manufacturing process. As well as with the configuration of full line packaging (HFFS) solutions for the food industry.
  • Design, innovate, and execute packaging solutions working closely with supportive resources.
  • Customize tooling for horizontal form fill seal machines.
  • Assist Research and Development Team in Germany.
  • Work with Drive Works to standardize tooling for multiple applications.
  • Design tooling for US customers.
  • Participate in group Development Projects – for US customers.
  • Provide technical assistance for new product development through part and equipment design, specification, and improvements.
  • Develop and maintain specifications for thermoforming equipment and tooling.
  • Design new tooling and retrofit/ modify existing machines.
  • Create prototypes for customer line reviews and sales pitches with major retailers.
  • Use Solid Works to create complex models & drawings for parts and assembly   groups.
  • Use AutoCAD to create and modify layout drawings.
  • Work with suppliers on costs reduction for locally sourced parts.
  • Maintain machine records (SAP) and documentation.
  • Work with Applications Engineer and Director of Technology on customized equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Skills and Abilities

  • Partner with engineering teams in design, manufacturing, materials, and projects to develop conceptual design, methodology and technical specifications of project for manufacturing.
  • Perform CAD, FEA, simulation concepts for new prototypes, upgrades and modification.
  • Deliver finished designs, detailed drawings, GD&T, tolerance stack up, BOMs, engineering specifications for bid (DFA/DFM).
  • Excellent technical skills and be able to create 2D-3D models and drawings in metrical   system.
  • Research and implement continuous improvements, documentation retention, participate in bid, etc.
  • Ability to manage multiple, parallel projects using formal project planning techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical controls, pneumatic controls and hygienic design is required.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability; Ability to coordinate own and others actions, manage own time.
  • Sensitivity to problems; ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
  • Employee must possess excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work in a team environment will be essential.
  • Must have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to manage varying priorities, be proactive and meet deadlines with direction from Team.
  • Team player with strong process and design improvement abilities.
  • Proficiency with computers including all proficient with computers including MS Windows, MS Office, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks.
  • Experience with SAP is preferred.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or a related field.
  • 5 years of proven work experience in designing mechanical components in packaging and thermoforming components and assemblies from concept through production.
  • Deliver technical designs of packaging and material handling that are optimized for weight, precision, manufacturing.
  • Experience with Plastic packaging material (flexible packaging, thin film, roll fed) knowledge is highly desirable.
  • Experience with thin film Roll Fed Thermoforming machines (HFFS).
  • Thermoforming Tooling design experience a plus.
  • Experience with sliced meat and cheese a plus.

Other Requirements

  • German language knowledge preferred but not required.
  • Current valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Valid U.S. passport or have the ability to obtain one.
  • Must have the ability to travel within North America and Germany occasionally.
